Ours began with these three themes… on a motorcycle.
I am Alison Grün, and for as long as I can remember, two-wheelers have been a part of my life.
In 2015, my motorcycling journey took a transformative turn when I moved to Malaysia.
That’s where I uncovered the incredible strength of sisterhood, the unique bonds forged on the path of adventure, and how stepping beyond our comfort zones can shatter fears and self-doubt.
During my off-road trips in Ladakh, India, and later in Upper Mustang, Nepal, I crossed paths with women who amazed me with their unyielding spirit in the face of daily challenges.
Their presence touched me deeply in a way I had never experienced before.
Their skills were incredibly impressive.
Their demeanor was truly admirable.
Yet, there was something holding them back from showcasing themselves.
Indeed, in most regions of the world, women make up the majority of the tourism workforce, but they tend to be concentrated in the lowest paid and lowest status jobs, while they also perform a large amount of unpaid work in family tourism businesses (UNWTO).
In addition, limited access to transportation and private vehicle ownership make it challenging to step our of their homes, to support themselves and their families financially.
They are hindered to fully realize their potential and live up to their best abilities.
Despite their skills and character, they remain constrained by traditional roles, often overlooked by the world.
This was where a new journey began.
With roots in Vietnam, a significant part of my life spent in Malaysia, and a brilliant team in Nepal, I took up the challenge to create the world I wish to live in, starting with Asia.
A place where we can share extraordinary motorcycling experiences.
A space where, thanks to them, we can provide motorcycle training and economic opportunities to women, so that they can recognize their own strength, reconnect with their true selves, and gain the confidence to claim the respect and position they deserve.
This is how I founded FreeW and its significant “W”s.
‘W’ for Women, because investing in women is investing in more sustainable, balanced, and inclusive economies.
‘W’ for Will, to encourage women to exercise their freewill by strengthening their self-confidence, challenging societal stereotypes and opening our sisters’ minds to all possibilities in front of them.
‘W’ for Wheels, because freedom starts within us, and motorcycling is a powerful vehicle to unleash the potential of women, both economically and emotionally.
